Guide to Hanging Wall Decor

Guide to Hanging Wall Decor

Summertime can be an excellent time to think about adding or changing your wall decor. Without the commotion of holiday decor, you can clearly decide how you want your space to feel year-round. We know how daunting a blank wall can be so here are some helpful tips to keep in mind while decorating your walls.

Step 1: Deciding What to Hang Where

A Perfect Pair: Two similar pieces next to each other or on top of each other

The pieces can be identical (as seen above) or just similar in content or color. We especially love incorporating pairs of landscape or seascape paintings. Using two pieces that are compatible in size will be naturally pleasing to the eye.

Go Big or Go Home: 1 large scale painting

More often than not, the bigger the piece the better to fill the space. Avoid the common mistake of hanging too small of a frame for the space. Adding a larger matboard and frame can help eliminate this problem.

In Full Bloom: Framed botanicals hung in a grid

Use an identical frame and hang with an even distance (2-3 inches) around for a polished look. You can easily tailor the number of prints to accommodate the space you are needing to fill. Using 4 prints is great for smaller spaces, while using 8-12 prints is lovely for a larger space. Adding a cream or blush matboard can accentuate the antique appearance of this timeless art.

Designed to Reflect: Mirrors can be art too

Having one mirror in every room quickly brightens up any space. Placing a mirror across from a window can reflect light even more and bring in the green of the outdoors. Mirrors are also a great tool for lightening up a room or hallway with little natural light.

Step 2: Deciding the Placement

Resist the urge to hang pieces too high, you want to enjoy seeing the art and not strain your neck to look at it.

Below are a few measurements that can be helpful, but if eyeballing and trusting your visual judgement is less intimidating, then by all means forget the tape measure and get to hanging!

Aim for the center of the piece or combined pieces to be at average eye level (57 inches from the ground). When hanging a piece above a couch or any furniture, try to stick with 6-8 inches above the furniture.

For the Love of Plate Walls

Plate walls are an easy way to make a charming design impact with very little effort.

Explore our plate wall collection online which includes a variety of plates from hand-painted, to antique, to beloved china patterns.

1 larger platter in the middle with dinner or dessert plates surrounding in a cross shape is lovely for larger spaces.

Helpful Tip: If you have a focal piece that is slightly too small you can compensate by adding plates around the artwork.

Three-four dinner plates stacked vertically or horizontally instantly add charm to smaller spaces.

Think of that awkwardly narrow wall space next to a doorframe or that empty space above a window. We recommend using these brackets to hang. Simply place on the back in the middle of the plate and hang with a nail as usual.

Lastly, don't let guidelines prevent you from dressing your walls.  A decorated wall, even one with a few holes, is more beautiful to look at than an empty wall!
